There are a few fundamental skills that we want students to be proficient with at the conclusion of their first grade year. I bring up lots of different scenarios and ask them to tell me what kind of inference they would make in that situation. Inference is when you use your background knowledge and clues from the text and illustrations to make an assumption or conclusion that is not explicitly stated in the text.
